We recently posed a very important, and perhaps slightly dangerous, question to our community of dedicated road warriors. The topic of RV upgrades is one that can bring both immense joy and a little bit of financial fear. We asked you to dig deep into your memories, and maybe your receipts, to recall your most ambitious improvement. We wanted to know the one purchase that made your wallet a little lighter but your rig feel a whole lot more like home. This poll was sent out exclusively in our weekly newsletter, so if you missed your chance to vote this time, be sure you’re subscribed to have your voice heard in the next one!

Here is a look at how your fellow RVers answered the question, “What’s the most you’ve spent on a single RV upgrade?”

Upgrade CostPercentage of RVers
Under $50022%
$500 – $2,00056%
$2,000 – $5,00017%
Over $5,0005%

The Thrifty Tinkerers

Let’s start by applauding the 22% of you who kept your biggest splurge under five hundred bucks. You are the masters of DIY, the sultans of small-but-mighty fixes. We imagine you proudly installing a new faucet or a set of fantastic LED lights, all while having enough money left over for a nice steak dinner. Your secret is safe with us, and we salute your fiscal responsibility.

The Mainstream Modifiers

Now, for the majority of you—the 56% who live comfortably in the five-hundred to two-thousand dollar range. This is the sweet spot for serious upgrades that truly transform the RV experience. You are the proud owners of new lithium batteries, fantastic mattresses, or perhaps a killer sound system. This is the price point where you stop just camping and start glamping in genuine style.

The Big Spenders & The “Please Don’t Tell My Spouse” Crew

Then we have the 17% who ventured into the two-to-five-thousand dollar territory. We’re talking major solar setups, high-end awning replacements, or a full suspension upgrade. You didn’t just dip a toe in the upgrade pool; you did a cannonball. And finally, a tip of our hat to the elite 5% who have spent over five thousand dollars on a single upgrade. You are the legends, the ones who have installed residential refrigerators or custom hardwood floors. We have just one question: can we come over?

Conclusion: Why We Believe the Results Landed This Way

We believe these results perfectly capture the psychology of the RVer. The large majority falling in the $500-$2,000 range makes complete sense, as this bracket covers the most common “game-changing” upgrades that factory-built RVs often lack, like a quality power system or a comfortable bed. The smaller percentages on the extreme ends are also telling. The “Under $500” group likely represents both new RVers testing the waters and seasoned veterans who are brilliantly resourceful. As for the top-tier spenders, we think that small 5% reflects a combination of two factors: the significant investment required for major mechanical or structural projects (like a lithium battery bank or a full solar array) and the simple, brave fact that some people just really, really love their custom espresso machines. After all, happiness is a choice, and sometimes that choice costs more than five grand.
