RVing has become more popular than ever, with countless travelers discovering the freedom and adventure of life on the road. However, anyone who has driven a motorhome knows that the standard factory suspension leaves much to be desired, especially when it comes to handling, stability, and overall ride comfort.
For many RV owners, the constant swaying, bouncing, and steering challenges can turn an exciting journey into a white-knuckle driving experience. Upgrading your RV’s suspension system might not be the most glamorous modification, but it could be the single most impactful change you make to improve your overall RVing experience.
We found a great video from the Endless RVing YouTube channel that details their experience with what they call their “biggest RV upgrade,” and below in the article are the highlights from their four years of real-world testing—but make sure to watch the entire video at the bottom of the article for all the details.
1. Why Standard RV Suspension Falls Short
The typical motorhome built on the Ford F53 chassis comes with basic leaf spring suspension both in the front and rear. As Jason from Endless RVing points out, “It’s very basic and does not translate into a smooth riding RV or, more importantly, an RV that handles very well in the wind or when going through traffic.”
When large trucks or buses pass by, the motorhome gets noticeably pushed sideways, creating a stressful driving situation. This stock suspension is one of the most commonly complained about aspects of gas motorhomes, making drivers “grab on for dear life” when encountering passing vehicles or wind conditions.
I mean, who hasn’t experienced that heart-stopping moment when your massive RV feels like it’s being tossed around like a toy boat in a hurricane just because a semi decided to whoosh past? It’s like trying to steer a bouncy castle through a wind tunnel!
2. The Smart Suspension Solution
The video showcases Liquid Spring, a smart suspension system with unique components unlike any other suspension system on the market. “There is an onboard microprocessor,” Jason explains, “it’s going to monitor your steering, your speed, your braking, road inputs at a rate of about 1,000 times per second and it’s going to adjust the suspension to react to those conditions.” Instead of traditional leaf springs or even air ride suspension, Liquid Spring uses specially designed struts filled with a silicon-based liquid that can be adjusted in milliseconds to respond to changing road conditions.
Smart suspension that makes 1,000 adjustments per second? That’s more decisions than I make in a month! My coffee maker can’t even decide when to stop brewing without my intervention, and here’s an RV suspension system playing 4D chess with the road surface in real-time.
3. Dramatic Improvement in Handling and Comfort
According to the Endless RVing hosts, the difference in handling with Liquid Spring installed is dramatic. “When we had the leaf spring system, if we made a turn or coming out of a driveway, you would get this back and forth sway,” they recall. “Now you might get a little bit and that’s it—it immediately stops.”
Similarly, the system significantly reduces the impact of windy conditions: “We drive in windy conditions, doesn’t matter, you don’t feel it, it doesn’t push, it doesn’t sway.” The system both softens the ride and tightens up the steering and handling.
Jason even compares the upgraded gas motorhome’s handling favorably to high-end diesel pushers: “We’ve driven a lot of high-end diesel pushers, we’ve driven Super Cs, we’ve driven a ton of different motorhomes, and I have to tell you that Liquid Spring really gives it a run for its money.”
Honestly, the fact that they’re comparing a gas motorhome with upgraded suspension to the Rolls Royce of RVs (diesel pushers) is like saying my economy car with fancy tires performs like a Porsche. If that’s even remotely true, sign me up yesterday!
4. Customizable Driver Interface Options
One of the most practical features highlighted in the video is the customizable driver interface of the Liquid Spring system. The control panel allows drivers to make on-the-fly adjustments while moving down the road. “You can raise the height of your vehicle 3 inches each way,” Jason demonstrates. “So you have your normal height, you can go 3 inches higher from normal height, you can go 3 inches lower—so about 6 inches either way.”
This height adjustment feature has practical applications for navigating challenging terrain: “If you’re entering or exiting a driveway, you have that tow bar with that low hitch, you can raise up, you can give yourself another 6 inches from the bottom, that way you have plenty of clearance.”
The system also offers different driving modes: Sport (tightest handling), Normal (balance of comfort and handling), and Comfort (softest ride). These can be selected instantly from the driver’s seat, allowing you to adapt to different driving conditions.
Being able to raise your RV by 6 inches on demand sounds like a superpower that would have saved me countless scrapes, bumps, and those soul-crushing moments when I hear that awful grinding sound underneath my rig. It’s basically transforming your motorhome into a vehicle from a spy movie that can adapt to any situation!
5. Long-Term Reliability and Maintenance
Perhaps one of the most compelling aspects of the upgrade described in the video is the long-term reliability. After four years of use, the hosts report: “It’s one of the few items on our motorhome that hasn’t broken.” The system was originally designed for ambulances before being adapted for motorhomes and off-road vehicles, contributing to its durability. They’ve experienced no maintenance issues in four years of ownership, and they praise the customer service at Liquid Spring: “You call them, they answer. If you have any issues, it’s been a great system.”
For the four-corner system, they note that an upgrade called “True Earth Leveling” allows you to level your RV using the suspension system: “Very much like air leveling on a high-end motorhome, you can now level with the suspension, or you could level with your levelers, or you could level with both.”
An RV component that doesn’t break for four years? That’s like finding a unicorn riding a dinosaur! Most RV owners have a permanent relationship with their service centers, yet here’s a complex suspension system just happily doing its job without drama. That’s the real miracle here!
