We posed a very important, book-related question to our community of road warriors. The great reading debate is a topic every RVer can weigh in on, as our literary choices say a lot about our travel style. Do you dive into fantastical worlds, or are you meticulously planning your next stop with a travel guide? We asked our readers to settle this once and for all in our latest newsletter poll.

We wanted to know what kind of pages you’re turning while your home is parked. The results are in, and they tell a fascinating story about life on the open road. Remember, this poll was taken exclusively by our newsletter subscribers.

And the Winner Is… Light Reading!

The people have spoken, and the results are clear. When it comes to reading material, the majority of you are all about that quick, easy, and visually stimulating content.

A Tale of Two Campfires

It appears that a solid chunk of you are escaping into fictional worlds. We totally get it. Sometimes you need a break from driving your house to read about someone who doesn’t even have a mortgage.

Meanwhile, an equal number of you are using your reading time for… more travel planning. This is a level of dedication we both admire and find slightly concerning. Your vacation from your vacation must be very well-organized.

But let’s be honest, the real winner here is the humble magazine. It’s the perfect commitment-free relationship for an RVer. You can read a short article, look at the pretty pictures, and then immediately use it to start your campfire.

The Hard Truth About Hardbacks

And then we have our non-fiction readers. A brave, small, and likely very well-informed six percent. We imagine you’re out there reading thick biographies and historical accounts.

You are probably the same people who have perfectly leveled rigs on the first try. We salute your earnest pursuit of knowledge, even on vacation.

Why We Think the Pages Fell This Way

We believe these results perfectly reflect the RV lifestyle. Magazines and fiction lead because they offer pure, uncomplicated escapism. After a long day of navigating narrow roads, your brain deserves a break, not a textbook.

The strong showing for travel guides confirms that for many, the journey is the destination, and the planning is part of the fun. It’s a beautiful cycle of using a guide to find a spot to read your guide. As for non-fiction’s last-place finish, it seems that when your backyard is constantly changing, the last thing you want is to be weighed down by a dense, factual narrative.

Your adventure is right outside your door; your book is just there to help you relax into it.
