Results
The results of our poll question “Have you ever had to change your travel plans due to weather?” showed a decisive majority of RVers have faced weather challenges:
- With 81% voting “Yes”
- And only 19% voting “No”.
These numbers tell a compelling story about the reality of RV travel and the flexibility required to enjoy this lifestyle.
When Mother Nature Has Other Plans
Let’s face it – RVers and weather apps have a relationship more complicated than most marriages. You check the forecast obsessively, plan your route meticulously, and then Mother Nature looks at your plans, laughs heartily, and sends a surprise thunderstorm your way. It’s like she’s saying, “That awning you just extended? I think it would look better flapping in 40 mph winds!”
Those 81% of respondents who’ve changed plans have likely sat in their RVs, watching rain pelt their windows, wondering if their carefully planned beach vacation is about to become an extended Walmart parking lot staycation. Meanwhile, the lucky 19% who’ve never altered their travels must have either meteorologists in the family or possess weather-controlling superpowers the rest of us would pay good money to acquire.
The Art of the RV Pivot
One of the greatest skills any RVer develops is the ability to pivot faster than a basketball player when weather turns threatening. That high percentage of weather-affected travelers speaks to the importance of flexibility in the RV lifestyle.
“Change of plans” becomes less of an emergency announcement and more of a daily mantra. Heading to Florida but hurricane warnings pop up? Suddenly the Smoky Mountains look mighty appealing. Desert camping plans washed out by unexpected rain? Perhaps it’s time to explore that charming small town you’ve been meaning to visit. The successful RVer doesn’t fight the weather – they dance with it, albeit sometimes reluctantly and with colorful language involved.
Weather Apps: An RVer’s Best Frenemy
The modern RVer’s phone is inevitably filled with multiple weather apps, each consulted like ancient oracles before making decisions. We check radar maps with the intensity of military strategists, compare hourly forecasts across three different services, and still somehow end up surprised when conditions change unexpectedly.
The 81% who’ve adjusted their travels have likely developed their own weather rituals and superstitions. Some swear by the Weather Channel, others by AccuWeather, and a dedicated few still insist on watching the sky and feeling the wind “the old-fashioned way” – right before checking four different apps to confirm their suspicions.
Why These Results Make Perfect Sense
Our poll results revealing that the vast majority of RVers have altered their travel plans due to weather reflect the fundamental reality of mobile living. Unlike traditional vacations where reservations are firm and cancellations costly, the RV lifestyle is built on adaptability. The high percentage of weather-affected travelers isn’t surprising when we consider the unique vulnerabilities of RV travel.
RVers face challenges that traditional travelers don’t: high-profile vehicles that struggle in strong winds, limited insulation against extreme temperatures, roads that become impassable in snow or floods, and the ever-present concern about severe weather damaging their homes on wheels.
The 19% who haven’t changed plans may be newer to RVing, travel primarily in climate-stable seasons, or stick to regions with predictable weather patterns.
The overwhelming majority who have adjusted to weather realities represents the wisdom of experienced RVers who understand that flexibility isn’t just convenient – it’s essential for safety and enjoyment. After all, the true spirit of RV travel isn’t about rigidly sticking to plans; it’s about embracing the journey, wherever changing winds may take us – preferably in the direction of better weather and full hookups.
